“If you can react the same way to winning and losing, that’s a big accomplishment. Quality is important because it stays with you the rest of your life, and there’s going to be a life after tennis that’s a lot longer than your tennis life.” - Chris Evert Lloyd

Dubbed by many as the ‘Leap of the Century’ Beamon’s long jump remained the world record for 22 years, 316 days until it was broken in 1991 by Mike Powell. This is the second longest holding of this record, as Jesse Owens held the record for 25 years, 1935-1960.

As part of the United States’ 4×100-meter relay team, Jesse Owens won his fourth gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. He was the first American to win four medals in one Olympics. His relay team set a new world record of 39.8 seconds, which held for 20 years.

She was the first US woman to win an Olympic gold medal in women’s gymnastics all-around event, and has won the most medals (five) of any athlete in the 1984 Olympics.
Michael Phelps already holds the record for most gold medals (14) in Olympics history. But with 16 medals overall, Phelps still needs three more medals to become the most decorated Olympian of all time.
Here are the six summer Olympians that have won at least 13 medals. Of those just missing the cut are Data Torres (12 medals), Mark Spitz (11), Matt Biondi (11), and Carl Lewis (10).
